A huge crossover FPV drone race is coming to California, and $50,000 is up for grabs.
The Xfinity CA Drone Speed Challenge Level 2, put on by California-based drone racing group Aerial Sports League, will take place July 18 and 19 at the Golden1 Center in Sacramento, Calif.
And it’s not just a drone race. The event is actually a crossover of FPV racing with what’s called Velocidrone, which is a fast paced multi-player and single player FPV drone racing simulator game .
To participate in the big race, pilots need to qualify in one of four races, which are underway right now.
Two qualifier races were held over the weekend, and two more will take place next weekend — on June 23 at 8 p.m. ET and June 24 at 3 p.m. ET.
From there, those winning teams will be invited to compete live for $25,000 on a custom FPV track at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, CA.
On top of that $25,000 an additional $25,000 will be donated to a non-profit organization in the winning team’s name, which will be made by the competition’s sponsor, Comcast.
Even if you don’t win, Aerial Sports League says every team that participates in the Xfinity CA Drone Speed Challenge will receive at least $1,500 in prize money, as well as $200 in spending money during the weekend, two nights hotel accommodation, a pilot dinner as well as some other goodies including a swag bag.
“After the success of last year’s race, we wanted to do something even more spectacular for 2018. This will be a unique crossover event featuring both drones and video games in a single competition,” said Marque Cornblatt, CEO of Aerial Sports League. “We anticipate a diverse group of some of the best pilots and gamers will qualify, but teams will need to demonstrate a wide range of skills and teamwork if they hope to reach the podium.”
The race is open to pilots of all ages and nationalities.
