Their drones may be increasingly getting small, but over in DJI land, life is big.
At least, that’s what their latest announcement seems to indicate.
DJI has sent out press invites for an event at the Good Morning America studios in New York City on Wednesday, Nov. 28th at 2 p.m. ET.
There are no details beyond that, save for an image with the slogan “Because Life Is Big!” in the front. The image is abstract but appears to show people jumping into a swimming pool, holding items such as a guitar and a suitcase. Here’s that image:
There are a variety of theories going around the internet as to what the product launch is all about. Here are some ideas:
DJI Phantom 5: some people think the swimming pool resembles a lens, leading us to believe that the new drone might have interchangeable lenses, a larger sensor and possibly even a Hasselblad camera. The shape is similar to the Hasselblad lens, which you’ll find on the Mavic 2 Pro, which launched earlier this year. (DJI acquired a stake in Hasselblad at the end of 2015. The Swedish company manufactures high-end, highly specialized cameras, including the camera that documented the first landing on the moon. The two companies announced their first joint product in July 2016 — a combination of the M600 drone platform with the A5D medium format camera. )
DJI Osmo Pocket Wireless Module: Drone DJ reported earlier this month that an FCC filing appeared for a “DJI Osmo Pocket Wireless Module,” indicating that DJI may be working on an improved, smaller version of the Osmo.
Water resistance: In most cases, the last thing you want to do with your drone is get it wet. So why pair their product launch with a swimming pool? This could indicate some sort of waterproof feature.
2018 has already been a huge year for product launches at DJI. DJI has made a myriad of minor announcements around partnerships and software. But DJI has made some groundbreaking hardware product announcements, including the Mavic Air launch at the beginning of 2018, followed by the release of the Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom drones this summer.
