Celine Dion has a new world tour, and you’ll want to stick around for the encore, as you’ll be treated to a drone show.
The encore of Dion’s tour will be (of course), the song “My Heart Will Go On.” But this rendition has a little surprise that most audiences won’t expect — drones.
104 drones will rise from the stage around Dion, floating about as the song reaches its crescendo. Once Dion hits the song’s final strains, they hover above her, before descending to the stage one by one — until a single drone sinks down towards Dion’s outstretched hands. She raises her arms, and it lifts away.
The drone show was created by the Swiss company Verity Studios AG, which is famous for many other shows including getting 8 drones to fly in sync with each other in a routine every night on stage for the Broadway incarnation of Cirque du Soleil called “Paramour.” They also provided the drones seen in rapper Drake’s 2018 Aubrey & the Three Migos Tour., and put on a Chinese New Year show for CCTV involving 88 drones designed to look like Chinese lanterns. Additionally, Verity Studios has put on shows at more than 100 other venues across 20 countries.
Verity is among a small set of companies using drones as choreographed entertainment through their lighting and movement patterns. Another company, Intel, has pioneered the field of light show drones, putting on nighttime entertainment at events such as the Olympics Opening Ceremonies, Coachella and Walt Disney World. Light show drones are considered to be more environmentally friendly than other forms of nighttime entertainment such as fireworks.
Dion’s tour is traveling around the U.S. and Canada through the rest of 2019. The first half of 2020 will continue in North America, before she heads to Europe and the Middle East to finish out her tour.
