EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2020

EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2020 is cancelled, but here’s the good news

EAA AirVenture Oshkosh is quite possibly the best event an aviation enthusiast could ever attend. And sadly, due to the coronavirus pandemic, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2020 is cancelled.

The event, which is the world’s largest fly-in convention, takes place in the tiny town of Oshkosh, Wisconsin every summer and is widely considered “The World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration.” Before coronavirus came into play, this year’s event was set to host hundreds of thousands of visitors from more than 90 countries.

But the fun isn’t gone for good. EAA is instead organizing a “Spirit of Aviation Week,” to be held virtually between July 21-25.

The five-day event will include streamed and on-demand content streamed via EAAtogether.org, encompassing nearly every subset of aviation (that includes drones, as well as other types of aircraft like homebuilts, warbirds, vintage, aerobatics, and ultralights), and will showcase a mix of educational, informational, and entertaining (or all three at once!) content.

During Spirit of Aviation Week expect to see:

  • Presentations, forums, and discussions with aviation leaders
  • Historical and archival content
  • Homebuilding workshops, discussions, and educational tips
  • Content centered on pilot proficiency and learning to fly
  • A virtual exhibit space that showcases products, show specials, videos, and services available from the hundreds of AirVenture exhibitors.
  • Features from air show performers to military and space programs
  • Stories from those in EAA’s community through Hangar Flying segments

And if you can’t wait until July 21, popular pilot shop Sporty’s is hosting a more-than-month-long virtual airshow.

Sporty’s is airing a five-week-long series of events and experiences like webinars, live stream events, contests and flying videos on Sportys.com and its social media platforms. One of the highlights is a live stream concert from Sporty’s video host and longtime musician Rob Reider and a virtual airshow routine from performer Patty Wagstaff.

“While we can’t be together in Wisconsin, we hope we can help recreate some of the Oshkosh atmosphere online,” said Sporty’s President Michael Wolf.

The Sporty’s 2020 Virtual Airshow runs from June 29 to August 2.

While EAA AirVenture Oshkosh focuses primarily on manned aircraft, the organizers dove into drones in 2016. That’s the same year I attended for the first time — and I got to have a starring role by leading a few drone related events, including a hands-on class for 60 young women.

The following year was also huge for drones, as Amazon Prime Air brought their delivery drones to demo.

People who already purchased tickets for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2020 can opt to have their pre-sold admissions and camping reservations either be refunded or otherwise rolled over to the 2021 event.
